Senior scams are increasing in Manatee County, and older adults in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Parrish, Palmetto, and Ellenton are often targeted. I created this guide to help seniors and caregivers recognize common scams, avoid costly mistakes, and feel more confident using technology.
Many scams now happen through phone calls, emails, text messages, and pop up warnings on computers and tablets. These messages are designed to create fear or urgency. With the right information and a few simple habits, most scams can be spotted and stopped early.

Mail and Check Theft in Lakewood Ranch
Check theft and "check washing" have been reported in Lakewood Ranch and nearby areas, and the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Manatee County Sheriff's Office have investigated mail theft and check fraud. Checks are taken from the mail, altered, and cashed before the owner notices. Seniors who mail checks for bills or rent are common targets.

Scams Reported Near Bradenton and Sarasota
Manatee County and Sarasota authorities have reported several scams on the Suncoast since late 2025. Here are four patterns to know. I describe them in general terms so you can spot the same pattern no matter how the story sounds.
A Phone Call, Then a Courier Collects Cash
A caller claims to be from the government or a bank fraud team and says your money is in danger. Later, a courier or ride-share driver comes to pick up cash. Manatee detectives reported a ring that took more than $3.5 million from over 40 older Floridians, starting with a caller posing as an FTC representative. Sarasota police reported a case where a ride-share driver was sent to carry $18,500 in cash. The red flag is any request to hand cash to a stranger. Hang up, then call your bank yourself and talk to someone you know before you move any money.
The New Jury Duty Scam
Manatee County warned about a new version of the jury duty scam. The caller says you missed jury duty, threatens arrest, and asks for gift cards. Real jury summonses come by mail. The red flag is any threat of arrest over the phone. Hang up and do not buy anything. If you are unsure, contact the court clerk using contact details from an official county website.
Fake Utility Calls, Texts, and Emails
FPL has warned that scammers use AI-generated calls, texts, and emails that say your power will be shut off unless you pay right away, often by Zelle or Cash App. The red flag is a demand for payment by Zelle or Cash App. Do not reply or click anything in the message. Look up the phone number on your paper bill or in your account, and call that number to check.
Fake Tech Support Pop-Ups and AI Voice Clones
Regional coverage of Southwest Florida describes fake "your computer is compromised" pop-ups that tell you to call a number, and AI voice-clone calls that sound like a grandchild in trouble. I have not seen a voice-clone case reported in Manatee or Sarasota County, so I mention it as a regional pattern. The red flag is urgency, such as "call now" or "send money today and tell no one."
